The other day on a clown-related Facebook page, someone asked, "What makes a 'good' clown? and "What are your clown rules?"
Of course I had something to say . . .
As far as 'clown rules,' I use these (inspired by the teachings of Steve Smith):
Respect the art.
Respect the audience.
Respect other performers.
Respect yourself.
And what makes a good clown?
A good clown is a unique comical character.
A good clown is funny and lifts spirits.
A good clown is simple in action and thought, foolish with a childlike sense of wonder, honest and present, and playfully engaging.
A good clown is a complete clown -- her/his appearance, actions, and performing arts skills are all well developed, natural, and straight from the heart.
A good clown leaves her/his audience remembering how she/he made them feel.
A good clown clowns.
